A multitude of different academic institutions creates a lively scientific community in the capital of Lower Saxony. Currently, about 35,000 students are attending higher education in Hannover; higher education employs about 10,000 people. Grant rankings show that research and study are equally successful in Hannover. In 2006 the city ranked fifth in Germany for attracting third-party funding.
