A Mecca for art lovers

Art lovers and those with an interest in history could spend many days exploring Hannover’s art galleries and museums. But those who prefer to be out of doors when the weather’s fine will also find that the city teems with works of art wherever they go. In addition, the numerous exhibitions and artists’ studios in the area outside the city entice visitors to make cultural excursions into the Region.

All periods of history within easy reach

At the Sprengel Museum Hannover, directly alongside the Maschsee Lake, you will find great names such as Picasso, Nolde or Klee. But Hannover also boasts other galleries of contemporary art that are well known far beyond the boundaries of the Region: among them are the kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein and the Ahlers Pro Arte/Kestner Pro Arte Foundation. On the banks of the River Leine, Niki de Saint Phalle’s buxom Nanas form the beginning of a “Mile of Sculpture” along Brühlstrasse and Leibnizufer. Among the museums that are most attractive to families are the State Museum (Landesmuseum) with its departments of Prehistory, Natural History and Ethnology, the State Art Gallery and the Aquarium. The Kestner Museum too, which presents the ancient world including in particular ancient Egypt, is equally attractive to young and old. The Wilhelm Busch Museum, German Museum of Caricature and Critical Graphic Arts, possesses a unique collection of satirical art from four centuries that will put a twinkle in the eyes of the whole family. The Museum of History is a goldmine for all who are interested in the history of the state or the city.

Up in the air or down the line

In the “Klosterstollen”, a preserved coal mine in Barsinghausen, visitors can don helmet and overalls and set out on the trail of the “black gold”. They can get a feeling of what life was like for the people of the peat bogs centuries ago at the Peat Museum in Landestrost Palace, Neustadt am Rübenberge. Laatzen Museum of Aviation is a place for those who are fascinated by the history of technology, who can allow their thoughts to take wing there. And there is plenty of historical old iron to gape at at the Tramway Museum in Wehmingen, near Sehnde, where some of the veteran trams are even in operation. The Region’s Arts Associations invite visitors to go on a voyage of cultural discovery: lectures, visits to artists’ studios and a great diversity of exhibition projects are organised regularly in Gehrden, Langenhagen and other towns.
